Catholics Come Home (PT-3)
This month we will continue with our examining the Catholic Come Home website by taking a good hard look at the ten reasons found on it, about why someone would consider the Catholic Church as a home to return to. The opening few paragraphs begin, when I click on this topic, by starting with a soft, smooth message saying, "No matter how long you have been away from the Catholic Church, you can always come home. You can start going to Mass again (find a parish) and become a part of a parish community that is ready to welcome you with open arms. God is inviting you to dive into your faith in a deeper way than you ever have before." That is very hard to resist when you are feeling down and out, looking for kindness, especially if you still do not have that saving relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ .
These videos certainly have all the charm and comfort that anyone could want, but we must remember that there is a spiritual battle that is taking place for each and
everyone's soul. So with that in mind, let's look at the ten reasons given on this website in which this person feels that an ex-catholic or anyone else should return to the Catholic Church. They describe individuals that want meaning in their life, have childhood memories surface, make mistakes, feel the need to forgive others, and they want to get healed. These first five aren’t anything that anyone else hasn’t gone thro ugh in that the Holy Spirit is drawing them to Himself, which is a good thing. These feelings are normal and they are understandable, but will they find the answers to their problems in the Catholic Church ? Also, if you look at the remaining five questions, there are three that deal with similar feelings. They want to be part of a faith community, they want to have their children to have a faith foundation, and they want to help other people. These first eight reasons can all be answered by stating that they might come from a sincere heart, but the Bible tells us that there is only one path to salvation, sincerity without the Biblical truths will leave them simply Biblically lost. In other words, if their faith isn’t as the Bible standards are, nor as God’s solution tells us is His way, then what are they going to really have accomplished by joining that Church? Another point of concern is that the Bible tells us that there is only one way to get to Heaven, not many different paths to choose from.
This brings us to the final two reasons that people said for returning to the Catholic Church. These two reasons are that they hunger for the Eucharist and they think the Catholic Church has the fullness of truth and grace. So let us use this belief that the Eucharist is the actual body and blood of Christ that the Catholic Church teaches and compare this idea, this interpretation of theirs, with God’s word. This will help us determine whether it is the one true Church that Christ started, or just another “wolf in sheep’s clothing” that we are warned about in God’s word.
The Catholic Church tells us that this is found in John 6 where they claim it is to be a literal eating and drinking of Jesus where from verse 50 to 58 Jesus three times says,
“ He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.“ Now I know that some will say that the Catholic Church is “the” Church so their answers must be right. However, if Jesus is talking literally then explain about the same passages in which these come from, it also has that people would never die, nor hunger, nor thirst again, but they do hunger, thirst, and die every day. Also in John 4 we see that Jesus was talking in spiritual terms in verse 34 when He said, “ My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.” In fact in John 6:63 He comes out and tells us that, “ It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are Spirit.” Taking these literally and alternate verses figuratively demands answers to this problem.
There are other reasons for doubting this view too. In Matthew 15:16-18 we are told that nothing that enters the mouth can defile a man, it’s from the heart. Yet as a Catholic, why we would have to believe consuming a piece of bread would help us get to Heaven? Then in Acts 7:48 we are told that “ the Most High does not dwell in temples made with hands.” So why would the Catholic Church teach and expected us to believe that Jesus is in their tabernacles?
We also need an explanation that clarifies why eating the Host merits one salvation when we have a Gospel of grace, not works. Salvation actually can’t be gotten by any sacrament that one does because it is a gift acquired by faith in Jesus. If one can do something to merit something, then that is no longer a gift but a great deal.
In closing, Gospel Light Ministries just wants to point out the reality of this “Returning back Home” request. If they can’t be telling the truth about Jesus in this, or how one gets to Heaven, then how true will you be told in the rest of the Catholic “facts?” If Jesus Christ means anything to you, then do as the Bible says, run away from any false teaching Church, Go to a good Bible teaching Church and study God’s word for yourself . For this reason, 1 Peter 2:2 tells us – “ as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby.” Learn what the Bible says and doesn’t say and if you seek the truth, Jesus says you’ll find it and He’ll take care of you.
