So you believe in Christian Science?
This month we’ll look at the Christian Science religion to do as the Bible tells us to do in 1 Thessalonians 5:21, “Test all things; hold fast what is good.” Here is the internet address of where I checked the beliefs out on line: http://christianscience.com/questions/beliefs/ to see exactly what they claim that they are all about. Then I follow it up with what Scriptures tell us on that subject. But first I’ll give you a little History about it.
“Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” is Mary Baker Eddy’s primary work and the definitive textbook on the system of healing that she discovered in 1866 and named Christian Science.
These are the Christian Science Core beliefs:
Christian Scientists believe in one, infinite God who is All and all-good. They believe that God is not distant and unknowable, but that God is all-encompassing and always present, and that each individual is loved by God, cared for by Him, and made in God’s image—spiritual, not material.
The Bible does say that say that God loves everyone and that He is love. However that is far from the whole relationship that we can have with Him. Each individual is loved and cared for by God and given a chance to gain His Kingdom, but not everyone gets saved. In fact it says rather that we are either an adopted son of His or we are sons of Satan. (John 8:48-59) Jesus said that those who are the father’s will be taken care of by Him and “no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand.” (John 10:18) The Bible clearly states that we must be born again, change from our Earthly way of living and turn to His way and make Him the Lord and Savior of our lives. We have a choice to make, our way or His way, eternal life of happiness or his wrath. John is clear on this in several spots in his gospel (John 3:16-18, 36) and that Jesus will not strive with man forever. (Genesis 6:3) Until a person accepts the gift of his love, what Jesus did on the cross, that person will face these words when they die and God says, “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!” (Matthew 7:23) It’s not that God doesn’t love you, but do you love Him enough to follow Him?
Christian Scientists believe in the Bible and in Christ Jesus as the Son of God, or promised Messiah. And they believe that Jesus’ teachings and healing work expressed scientific Christianity, or the application of the laws of God—laws which are still practical and provable today, by anyone, anywhere. Christian Scientists consider the Commandments, as well as Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, to be central to their lives and practice of Christianity.
This is a good example of the words that appear to be right, but behind the words, there is a different intent or meaning to them. They say that they believe, yet here is what their Jesus is described as: Jesus Christ has a dual nature – Jesus the mortal man and Christ the spiritual idea of man. Jesus is the Son of God, but he is not God. Jesus only seemed to die on the cross. His triumph over the belief in death demonstrated that man is the perfect, spiritual, reflection of God and that disease and death are not real. Jesus’ shed blood had no power to cleanse from sin. The Bible tells us that none of these beliefs are very accurate in that Jesus is 100 percent God and then He temporarily came to Earth as 100 percent man. (see Philippians 2:5 to 8) He led a perfect, yet sinless, life to take our sins to the cross where He shed His life on our behalf. He eternally existed, and is the creator of all things. Mankind is desperately evil with a sin nature and needs to get washed by the blood of Jesus to be atoned for their sins. Any other belief is Satanic and false. If they think that our ability lies with following the commandments, then they should know that the Bible proves that we all fall short in that regard, (Romans 3:10-23) that God knows we break all of them. (James 2:10) Thus we must get washed, cleaned, and redeemed by His blood.
Above all, Christian Scientists believe in the saving, healing power of God’s love—that no one is beyond redemption, that no problem is too entrenched or overwhelming to be addressed and healed. In other words, Christian Scientists don’t believe that salvation occurs at some point in the future, but that the presence of God’s goodness can be experienced here and now—and by everyone.
Jesus told us in John 14:6, that He is “the way, the truth, and the life, that no one comes to the Father except through Him.” The bottom line is that being sincere does not necessarily mean that you follow God’s written word. It perhaps shows us, in this case rather, that the individual is trusting in the “Science and Health” book of Mary Baker Eddy instead.
One of the best ways to learn more about Christian Science is to explore the Christian Science textbook.
The Bible tells us in Jude 3 that we were given, once and for all, the truth of Scriptures and not to add to or take away from God’s word. The Bible also tells us the key is found in God’s word in Romans 1:16: “for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes,” and 1 Peter 2:2, “as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby.” When you know God’s word as He instructs us, you will then be able to see the deception that lies in these Bible additives. We are to trust in His written word alone for the Salvation message alone. There are a few other problems about the Christian Science religion such as giving its members the idea that people are better than we actually are. Where the Bible tells us repeatedly that sins separate us from God, they would have one thinking that their minds can cure their illnesses through prayer by faith. They seem to think of people as basically good creatures, whereas Scriptures show that we are not. Jeremiah 17:9 tells us that “the heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?” Until they repent about the need for putting on Christ’s righteousness and getting washed in the blood for our sin as the only cure for man, they will NOT be saved. By the way, they deny Jesus as God and deny in a real Heaven or Hell, so much for their claim that they follow Scripture. If you know a Christian Science person, why not show them what Scripture actually say? It might make them happy that you did!
