The title above is the way that this religion presents itself to anyone that comes across its website. And before I proceed, the reader must understand that this is an example of what Paul refers to in 2 Corinthians 11: 4 where he says, "For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted-you may well put up with it!" This is not the God of the Bible.
Eckankar is a faith that I had never heard of before the editor of this paper requested an article about it last fall. Recently it was mentioned in my Saturday's men's prayer group. There is no doubt that it is a false faith for very obvious reasons. Let’s look at Scriptures to see what it shows us.
Eckankar introduces itself by claiming that, "the purpose of Eckankar is to make God an everyday reality in your life. As Soul, you have the God-knowledge within you. The teachings of ECK will awaken the knowledge and love for the divine things that are already in your heart. The road to God is the adventure of a lifetime." Just in that statement, a Bible person can see the problem. Scriptures tell us that, "There is none righteous, no, not one." and "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God," (Romans 3:10 ad 23) Jesus told us, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." (John 3:3) Jeremiah even tells us, "The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked." (Jeremiah 7:9) Just look at our children as they grew up, their first trends were in selfishness and love for themselves, not others. And how many people really have any Biblical knowledge of God without seeking for that truth?
Eckankar continues with telling us, "someone named Harold Klemp is the spiritual leader of Eckankar. Each person is Soul, a particle of God sent into the lower worlds (including earth) to gain spiritual experience. Purified by the spiritual exercises, he comes into contact with the Holy Spirit. His goal is spiritual freedom in this lifetime, after which he becomes a Co-worker with God, both here and in the next world. Karma and reincarnation are primary beliefs.
Key to the ECK teachings is the Mahanta, the Living ECK Master. He teaches the sacred name of God, HU, which lifts one spiritually into the Light and Sound of God, the ECK. The ECK (the Holy Spirit) purifies one of karma (sin), making it possible for him to accept the full love of God in this lifetime. Personal experience with the Light and Sound of God is the cornerstone of Eckankar. Eckankar offers the most direct teachings on the Light and Sound of God. These twin pillars are missing in whole or in part from the rest. People who truly find these two aspects of God undergo a complete spiritual change."
This paragraph is loaded with deceptions that are directly against what the Lord gives us in Scriptures. The Bible is clear when it tells us that, "Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." (John 14:6) Jesus healed us (believers) by his finished sacrifice at Calvary's cross with His shed blood. When someone accepts His gift, they become righteous because of what He did just as God planned. "For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him." (2 Corinthians 5:21) It is, "with His stripes we are healed." (Isaiah 53:5) "having made peace through the blood of His cross." (Colossians 1:20) We are not getting cleaned up by spiritual exercises, as Titus 3:5 tells us, "not by works of righteousness which we have done." As for reincarnation, the Bible does not teach of second chances as it tells, "And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment." (Hebrews 9:27) The thought of getting saved by light and sounds is ridiculous in that, "In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise." (Ephesians 1:13.)
I could continue with giving you examples of how deceptive this Eckankar religion is, but I think you get the general idea already. It is much like Satan tried to distort the truth when Adam and Eve were in the garden. Genesis 3:1 says, ""Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?"" And then says, "Then the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." (Genesis 3:4,5).
Doesn't their teachings of, "His goal is spiritual freedom in this lifetime, after which he becomes a Co-worker with God," sound similar?
If you know of a family member or friend that has gotten involved with Eckankar, please show him this article or in whatever way you wish, explain to them the dangers and facts of where they currently sit in regard to their urgent need to repent and to get themselves right with the one true God of the universe.
There is only one God and only one way to spiritual happiness, through Jesus Christ, just as John 3:36 tells us, "He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him." Do it today! Their soul depends upon them hearing the truth.
